On March 5, 2009 Wanda McMillan, supervisor of the Coronach SARCAN depot, was surprised to be awarded the 2008 Depot Cleanliness and Accuracy awards at SARCAN's annual supervisor training session.
McMillan and part time staff member Maryanne Calkin take great pride in the cleanliness of their depot and after winning the customer service award last year, they hoped to get recognized in the area of cleanliness.
"The cleanliness award was the one I was shooting for and I got it!" said supervisor McMillan.
Each year, SARCAN Recycling, a division of the Saskatchewan Association of Rehabilitation Centre (SARI), recognizes depots that excel in the areas of depot cleanliness, depot accuracy, and overall customer service.
The results are based on feedback obtained through a secret shopper program.
McMillan and her depot were evaluated by a secret shopper twice during the year. Both employees remember a time that they suspect the shopper was the secret shopper.
The ladies recalled tell tale signs that led them to believe the shopper was evaluating them.
McMillan remembers one particular shopper checking the contents of their garbage cans and Calkin remembers the shopper spending more time looking around. The last clue was the customer asked for a receipt, something that few customers do.
The ladies were awarded for cleanliness and if you have visited the depot, you would agree. The depot is uncluttered, clean and smells fresh.
They were also awarded for accuracy. This is determined by how they deal with the secret shoppers transaction. The ladies explained that usually the bag of recyclables that the shopper presents contains a variety of items requiring different deposits. The bag will have a predetermined total that they are looking to see that the depot matches.
"The accuracy award was an extra bonus, obviously we must be counting pretty good." said Calkin.
The ladies both commended the community for their commitment to recycling and commented on the efforts that community members make to bring clean recyclables, making their jobs easier.
