The sign on the counter of Canada Post in Coronach says, "We have new equipment to serve you better." But the employees sign on the door says, "Please be patient with us as we become familiar with our new retail Point of Sale System."
On January 29, after minimal training, the office went live. The new system will automate the entire counter service at the post office. Any stamp purchases, parcels or admail will all be in the computer.
The learning curve is a bit sharp and the system has a few bugs to get worked out but the employees are looking forward to using the new system to serve the customers better. Barb Brenner, Coronach Post Mistress, said, "We are learning as we go, it's different and it's going to take a little longer (at the counter.)
The Coronach office received the new computer equipment in September and in October a Canada Post technician came out and hooked it up.
Rosalie Crooks, Coronach's peer mentor from Lafleche, came down to assist the staff to get going on the new system. The Lafleche office has been using the system since the fall and Crooks received some training.
Although the staff looks forward to the day when the system works well and they are confident with it; right now, things are slow! Each customer must be entered into the computer in the order that they appear at the counter, meaning they are unable to sell a quick stamp or grab a parcel while the other employee deals with a longer procedure like mailing a parcel. Brenners asks for the public's help as they learn. "Be patient with us." she said.
The other major problem is when they have a problem with the system and have to call Ottawa for assistance. Employees, Dianna Kupper and Barbara Brenner explained that the computer has been down for up to an hour and a half while they either try to get through to the help line or work with the technician on the phone. Brenner said, "the system still has bugs in it and it will shut down on us. We have to phone the hlep line to get help and we can't help any customers until we get (the computer system) back running. Hopefully this will all get fixed!"
Kupper, part time assistant, said, "I think it will be great fun! It' something new; once we have had a few more days working on it and once the system gets itself figured out."
Senior part-time assistant, Barb Wilson talked about the customers patience with the process, "People have been great. Patient, humorous sometimes and helpful."
Patience please learning in progress!
