An early spring or six more weeks of winter?

With the above seasonal temperatures that we have been enjoying in southern Saskatchewan this winter, residents would be hard pressed to argue with the either outcome on Groundhog day.

In Canada, both of the country’s furry forecasters had the best news possible. Both Shubenacadie Sam of Nova Scotia and Ontario’s Wiarton Willie did not see their shadow. According to tradition, that means an early spring is on its way.

In the United States, the news wasn’t as favourable. In Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, so winter will stick around a bit longer for our neighbors to the south.

The Coronach Library Reading Circle got in on the fun of Groundhog Day as well. As part of their regular Thursday morning gathering, the kids coloured little paper groundhogs and glued them to a stick so they could pop out of cardboard tubes.

This reporter is happy to report that the groundhogs the kids made did not see their shadow, so Coronach and area residents can be doubly reassured that an early spring is on the way.
