To the Editor:

Sun Country Health Region regrets the misunderstanding that developed in late October over a job posting for a Nurse Practitioner in your community. I assure you the Region’s goal is to provide the best possible health care to all residents of this area.

The Region is preparing a revised plan to provide health services to the Coronach community that involves a partnership with the Five Hills Health Region.

Final details must be concluded before that plan can be publicly released.

The job posting for a nurse practitioner in your area was withdrawn from our website in early October due to developments in that service plan.

The job was re-posted Tuesday, Nov.1, with some modifications.

Any applications received before the posting was withdrawn remained in the competition, with the applicants’ consent. The Region apologizes for the withdrawal of the posting without an explanation.

I appreciate the opportunity to explain the situation to the community. I hope you understand that Sun Country Health Region is on your side when it comes to the provision of quality health care.

Unfortunately, Nurse Practitioners are held back from practicing where they want. Unlike doctors, NPs must wait for a job posting in order to be able to work in a certain area; they are at the whim of the health district. It is this dysfunctional "top down" approach that prevents small communities from getting the health care that they need. The public should be lobbying for the government to take another look at how NPs are funded. Ontario government is nowfunding contracted NPs (paid by contract with no union involvement). In Saskatchewan, NPs cannot open their own practice because who will pay them? NPs, and their communities, are at the mercy of the health district and union rules. Coronach had the right idea in attracting an NP, unfortunately the health district took away any hope they have in securing that position because the job posting no longer exists. Why did they do that? What was the harm in keeping the posting up in the hopes that someone one day might come along and be attracted by Coronach's incentive plan? Its time the public stood up for what they want here in Coronach and in other areas. Its time the government asked the people what they want instead of having upper management decide.
