Darren's Drivel

Topics :
Oilers , NHL , Blackhawks , Cuba , Detroit

Kelly is on holidays in Cuba for a week soaking up the sun and the beautiful weather, probably drinking Cristal being served to her by muscular, tanned men with no shirts on. I must say it is a well deserved holiday as she works tirelessly and dedicates herself, day in and day out, to putting together the newspaper on a weekly basis. My appreciation for what she does for the newspaper cannot be expressed into words. She is a wonderful person to work with and makes it a joy to come to work each and every day!

....Heeeyyy, wait a minute! I think someone hacked into my ‘Drivel’ this week, I would never say those things! And I bet I know who did. How she did that from Cuba, I’ll never know.

But I must say it is quiet around the office. If you happen to walk by the office in the next week and see me talking, chances are it will be to myself. Out loud. I tend to do that a lot.

I haven’t talked about my Oilers much lately, mainly because it’s too depressing to. But what can you say about the run Sam Gagner has been on? Scoring eight points in a single game! He tied Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey’s Oilers’ record, and was the first player to do so since Mario Lemieux did the feat in 1989, and only the 14th player in NHL history.

The game Gagner had against the Blackhawks was definitely one for the ages. As I watched, I knew that something special was happening, but never quite realized the significance until I watched the sports shows that night and the next day. It is all anyone was talking about. Gagner was even trending on Twitter around the world. Now, that’s saying something! (By the way, don’t forget to follow me, @DarrenMetzger)

Gagner followed up his eight point game by recording points on the first three Oilers’ goals in the next game against Detroit. So, he had points in 11 straight Oiler goals. That streak did break a record held by The Great One, who only had a piddly streak of 10.

It’s nice for the Oilers to finally have a full healthy roster. Oh wait, that only lasted about a period and half until Nugent-Hopkins got hurt again last Monday. I know every team goes through injury troubles, but it always seem to be our best players, it does get frustrating.

Well, I’m only days away from being able to upgrade my cell phone and finally enter the 4G world. I’m just a little excited. But I still haven’t decided which phone to get.

I have decided that it won’t be an iPhone. It seems way too proprietary for my liking. Most things have to be run through iTunes. I want to drag and drop files, like I do on my Android tablet and my BlackBerry. It just seems like an unnecessary step, so you have to use their software.

Or, it could just be that I’m a Google fan. Just by having a gmail account means that I can sign into all the Google and Android services that are offered.

So, it has come down to Android or BlackBerry. Yes, I’m still considering a BlackBerry. The new Galaxy Nexus smartphone looks pretty impressive, that phone does have a slight lead right now.

Have you ever wondered what kind of smartphone you have says about you when it comes to your dating life?

Well, guess what? There was an online survey to tell you, of course. With Valentines Day on the way, I’d thought I might share the results with you.

According to the survey, If you’re looking for a one-night stand, you might want to target someone with an Android phone. If you want to date a co-worker, hope she has an iPhone. If you just want to just go for drinks, you will want to invite someone with a BlackBerry.

The online survey, compiled by Match.com, of 1,068 single Canadians found that 62 per cent of Android users said they’ve done the deed on the first date, compared to 57 per cent of iPhone users and 48 per cent of BlackBerry fans.

As mentioned, Android fans are also most likely to have a one-night stand, 55 per cent, and be more active on dating websites. 72 per cent of Android users had visited an online dating site, compared to 58 per cent of iPhone users and 50 per cent of BlackBerry users.

iPhone addicts are office romantics (another reason I won’t be getting an iPhone). Nearly 25 per cent of single iPhone owners have had an office romance in the last five years, and they are mostly likely to wait just one day to call after a date. Android or Blackberry users will wait until after two or three dates. (Sounds about right)

BlackBerry users are most likely to drink alcohol on a first date. 72 per cent will have a drink on a first night out, which may explain why a whopping 67 per cent of BlackBerry users also said they have experienced love at first sight.
