GEORGE PEACOCK - Mayor’s Musings

Finally summer is here. Hopefully things will warm up and we will experience timely rains throughout July and August. At this time it’s great to see the landscape so fresh and green.

The pool is up and running a little earlier than usual this year so get out and enjoy. That means in the normal fashion by utilizing the pool when it is supposed to be open and not in the fashion utilized by some locals who thought breaking into the pool in the early hours of the morning was a good idea. The fence that was damaged because of this stupid escapade was there to prevent the possibility of some ones children gaining access without supervision and preventing a tragic accident. Hats off to the Town crew who are doing a great job of staying on top of all of the daily needs of our community including fixing up the pool fencing prior to this incident and then after.

Also, a thank you to the volunteers who are making our town look so good by planting the flower baskets etc. The murals new location looks good and will be a living memorial to the talents of Pat Siggelkow. As an aside, the name “Coronach”, which most of us realize was the name of an Epsom Derby winning horse is also the dictionary definition of a Celtic (Scottish / Irish) lament. In fact I have a CD with the compilation (complete with bagpipes) “Coronach” which starts rather mournfully and ends with a very lively tune. If this has you excited and sitting on the edge of your seats let me know and I’ll let you hear it but don’t all rush over at the same time!

On a more serious note, the Health Care issues continue. This time I find myself cautiously optimistic that things will improve. Members of the Health Advisory Board (Town / RM) met with Hutch Ambulance with the objective of putting forward a proposal to provide 24/7 ambulance service for Coronach residents. To clarify our position, we are giving Sun Country the option of providing us with the service we feel we should have a right to, or assisting us to provide the service Hutch are willing to provide us with. On Monday 18th we went to Weyburn for a meeting with Sun Country board members including the interim CEO Marga Cugnet. While this meeting was essentially a feeling out process, with Hutch putting forward their proposals and the Health Advisory board and the Sun Country board putting forward their take on this issue, it was a positive first step. It is obvious that there is a way to go but I was enthused that the process was being treated seriously by both sides and a follow up meeting is scheduled for Tuesday July 3rd in Coronach. Hopefully, when our prospective Doctor comes for a look see July 9th he will be happy with what he sees and decide to hang out his shingle in our community.

In the mean time have a great Canada day holiday and preferably spend it in Coronach as the tourism committee have put in a pile of work on your behalf!
