On Sunday, June 13 Girls softball teams gathered in Gravelbourg for their league tournament.
Put off one day to allow more time for the grounds to dry after higher than normal rainfall in the area, the girls enjoyed a beautiful day with sunny skies, temperatures in the low twenties and no wind.
The tournament consisted of the Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam, and Midget age groups.
There were not enough teams in the Mite (9 & Under) age group to have a league.
The tournament began at 8:00 a.m. with the Pee Wees (13 & Under) from Mankota taking on the home town team of Gravelbourg. Mankota defeated Gravelbourg and headed for the final.
The Coronach Pee Wees hit the field at 9:30 a.m., up against Assiniboia. With a win over Assiniboia, Coronach advanced to play Mankota in the final. After going undefeated all year, Coronach kept their streak alive, bringing home the gold medals. Gravelbourg defeated Assiniboia in the Bronze medal game.
The Squirts (11 & Under) age group began at 10:00 a.m. with the Gravelbourg - Piche team, up against Mankota. Mankota was victorious and advanced to play Gravelbourg-Hoag who had a bye the first round.
In the other first round match, Assiniboia played Coronach at 11:30 am with Coronach moving on to the final against Mankota who were victorious over Gravelbourg-Hoag.
The A side final between Mankota and Coronach was played at 4:00 p.m.
The Coronach Squirts were undefeated heading into the league tournament, but with the wet spring, they had yet to play Mankota. A tight battle ensued, with Mankota up by two when Coronach took their last bat.
The girls scored three to win the game and take home the gold medals, to remain undefeated.
In B side action, the Assiniboia team eliminated Gravelbourg-Piche and then played Gravelbourg-Hoag at 6:30 p.m. in the B side final. Assiniboia and Hoag had a close game, tied after regular innings. In extra inning action, both teams came across the plate three times to leave the score tied. A decision by both teams saw bronze medals awarded to both the Assiniboia and the Gravelbourg-Hoag teams.
The Midget Girls began their day at 10:00 am with Gravelbourg and Assiniboia going head to head. Assiniboia won to advance to play Coronach who had a bye in the first round.
Limerick played Mankota at 11:30 am with Mankota heading for the final.
In B Side action, Limerick played Gravelbourg and then advanced to the B side final against Coronach who lost their opening game against Assiniboia.
With only seven on the regular roster for Coronach, a number of different players from the Bantam and Pee Wee teams could be seen filling up the positions on the Midget team throughout the day.
Limerick defeated Coronach to win with Bronze medals, with Assiniboia over Mankota for the gold.
In Bantam Girls (15 & Under) action, Assiniboia defeated Mankota in the opening game at 2:00 p.m. Coronach defeated Vanguard in the other first round game. Vanguard defeated Mankota to take the bronze, with Coronach picking up the gold medals in the final game of the day at 6:30 p.m.
