It was a hot day, at the Coronach Golf Course for the High School Sectional Playoffs that were held on Friday, September 9. Players from Coronach and Assiniboia participated in the event.
23 golfers took part in the Bantam division, playing a 9 hole round. The grade 7 to 9 group was won by Coronach School’s Jayce Wilderman with a 46. Second place went to Assiniboia’s Carson Bell with a 47. Brady Resch of Coronach was third with a 48. Ausin Kupper, also from Coronach, shot a 51 to finish fourth. Tied for fifth, with a round of 59, were Assiniboia’s Nolan Berner and Coronach’s Chase Martin. The top five golfers and ties advanced to the District Playoffs that were held at Thompson Lake on September 15.
The Senior group consisting of grades 10 through 12, then teed off for an 18 hole round. On the boys side, Coronach School took the top three spots. Riley Grona continued his great play this year and finished first with a score of 69. Second was Terrick Wilderman with an 85 and Brandon Thurlow came in third with a score of 87.
The Senior girls division had three golfers take part, all from Coronach School. Shania Noll shot the best round with a 91. Sydney Elder was second with a 98 and Keirstin Bartlett finished with a 131.
The top three golfers in each division advanced to the District Playoffs, held at the Hillcrest Golf and Country Club in Moose Jaw on Friday, September 16.
The scores on the senior side were combined to give a team score as well. The Coronach School boys team of Grona, Wilderman, Thurlow and Dylan Mack recorded a 228 and Assiniboia finished up with a 270. The scores were calculated based on the best three scores of the golfers for each hole.
The only girls team was from Coronach and had a score of 186. That score was based on the best two scores from each hole.
Coronach Golf Coach Belinda Spagrud said it was a wonderful day of golf. “I really want to thank all the golf marshals, course workers and volunteers who helped out. The course is in great shape and the groundskeepers are doing a great job,” added Spagrud.
The Coronach Golf Team is hoping for another strong showing at districts. Spragrud commented, “Both teams are quite strong, they were at provincials last year and we’re looking for another trip back there.” Provincials will be held at Kenosee Lake on September 22-24.
