The Coronach Merchant Hockey senior men’s hockey team hosted their first game of the season on Saturday, November 12 when the Hodgeville Huskies came to town.

The Merchants will, once again, be playing in the Notekeu Hockey League (NHL) with the Assiniboia Rebels, Glentworth Thunder, Gravelbourg Hornets, Herbert Hawks, Hodgeville Huskies and Mossbank Blades. The Lafleche Flyers have taken a leave of absence for the 2011-12 season.  The Morse Royals, who last played in the 2009-2010 season, did not field a team again this year.

The teams in the NHL agreed, at a league meeting, to play a 17 game schedule, with the last games scheduled to be played by the end of January, 2011.

The Coronach Merchants registed a full roster of players, losing veterans Nathan Kabrud,  John Plumb, Michael Foley, Jason Foley, Justin Noll, Jason Thorhaug, Andrew Tjeltveit, and Miguel Marit from the roster and adding Rockglen’s Cody Hansen, and Coronach’s Chris Monteyne, a number of players from last year’s Coronach Midget team, as well as Estevan’s Jordan Blanchette.   Brad Adam and Kale Kupper will man the pipes for this year’s team. The Merchants dropped their first game to the Hodgeville Huskies, coming out flat, dropping six goals in the first 12 minutes of the game.  The Merchants picked it up to go 2 goals to the Huskies 1, in the remaining 2 1/2 periods of play.

The Merchants played back-to-back home games the weekend of November 18 and 19, with Mossbank and Glentworth on the visitor’s bench.  Keep your eye on the Triangle News Scoreboard for weekly updates on the Coronach Merchants and the Notekeu Hockey League.
