On March 9, 10, 11 the Poplar River PiRPS represented the Poplar River Power Station at the annual “SaskPower/SaskEnergy Rec Hockey Tournament” in Regina. The tournament is held every year where teams from all around the province gather to compete for bragging rights, as well as for a spot in the “National utilities tournament”, which goes to the winner of the ‘A’ final. In order to be eligible to play in the tournament a player has to be the employee of SaskPower, SaskEnergy or a subsidiary company or be the spouse or child of such an employee. This is the 8th year that the PiRPS have taken a team to the tournament, with their best finish in previous years being a loss in the ‘A’ side semi finals. This year’s tournament had 11 teams entered. Each team played two round robin games. After the round robin, the teams were ranked from one through eleven depending on how many games and periods they won, as well as goals for and goals against. The top four teams advanced to the ‘A’ side. The PiRPS won both of their round robin games against the Regina Raiders and the team from Trans-Gas and were ranked third, advancing to the ‘A’ semi final, where they faced the two time champion Saskatoon Outages. In a very fast and exciting game, the PiRPS ended up beating the Outages by a score of 5-2, earning themselves a spot in the ‘A’ final game for the first time ever. Their opponent in the championship game would be the same Regina Raider team that they defeated in the round robin. The final game was very close from start to finish, with the lead changing hands several times but when the final buzzer went the PiRPS were victorious by a final score of 5-4. This meant that the PiRPS clinched themselves a spot in the National tournament and will be representing Saskatchewan in Edmonton in October. This year’s team included: Brad Adam, Pat Clavelle, Scott Kirby, Derek Adam, Andrew Hiltz, Justin Noll, Ty Foley, Todd Wilson, Brandon Mack, Trevor Barrett, Josh Beck, Chris Noll, Zach Flemming, Logan Skinner, and Tyren Kupper. — Submitted by Brad Adam
