On October 29, both Coronach School Bantam boys and girls volleyball teams competed in Districts playdowns.
The boys hosted Gravelbourg, Rouleau, Central Butte, Mankota and Bengough. Coronach played first playing the toughest competition of the day Gravelbourg, after 2 close sets Coronach had lost their first game.
The girls traveled to Rouleau and played Avonlea and Glentworth. They played Avonlea taking the game to 3 sets but falling short and like the boys, lost their first game.
In the second game the Coronach boys faced Rouleau, beating them in two sets. The girls played Glentworth the only team that had beat them all year. After a long game Glentworth won in two sets taking Coronach out of Districts and sending them home. “We had a very good season, girls were undefeated in regular season only losing once in a tournament to Glentworth. We had quite a few first year players and they have come a long way. We would like to thank the team.” said Miss. Karpinski and Miss. McLean. “Looking forward to next season!”
In the boys semi-finals Coronach faced Central Butte, beating them in 2 sets to advance to finals. Gravelbourg eliminated Bengough in semi-finals to advance to play against Coronach for the second time that day.
In the first set, it went back and forth but Coronach won it 25-17, needing only one more win to claim gold. On the last set Steven Elmy led the way by getting 10 points off serves and getting the team moving. Coronach did not let up after that, scoring more and more until the end with an outstanding victory of 25-4, winning districts!
“We had a season of growth with our young team, we have improved everytime we played” said the coach of the boys, Mrs. Christa Elder.
District championships in the top level for the bantam aged teams. The senior teams are moving into playoffs, with provincials in their sights.
