On Wednesday February 29, the Junior Coronach Colts Basketball team hosted the Sectional Playoffs. The boys handily defeated Assiniboia 92 to 27. The Colts did a great job executing the press, stealing the ball several times in the front court, which converted to points.
After winning sectionals, the Colts advanced to District Playoffs in Central Butte on March 3. Their opening game was against the Gravelbourg Hawks. The Colts defeated Gravelbourg 53 to 43. Although the boys never gave up the lead, the game remained close till the end.
Since the Colts easily won all their games this season, this was a new, but great experience for the boys.
The Colts went on to play the Central Butte Bull Dogs in the District final. Again this game was close, but the Colts were able to squeak out the win - 54 to 45. After the first quarter the Colts were ahead by just two points. However, in the second quarter the boys played great defense allowing the Bull Dogs to score just two points, to end the half 33 to 17. The Colts were up by as much as 22 in the third quarter, but just to make it interesting for the fans and stress out their coach, they let Central Butte back in the game in the fourth quarter and only ended up winning by 9. “Oh well, a win is a win and we are the South Central District Champs. That’s all that matters, oh and that the boys will be paying to get rid of the grey in my hair!” said Coach Belinda Spagrud. “I look forward to spending the next 3 or 4 basketball seasons with this fine group of gentlemen, in the senior program. Thanks to all the parents for sharing their sons with me this past season and for all their support and encouragement.”
