There were about 89 Grades 3-6 athletes competing from Bengough, Rockglen, and Coronach schools. They were split into grade-alike groups with a teacher leader from the three schools.
Students participated in events such as high jump, running long jump, and 60 m, 100 m, 200m and 400 m races. Grades 3 and 4 competed in ball throw and Grades 5 and 6 learned how to do shot put. Grade 6 learned how to do triple jump, while Grades 3-5 had standing broad jump.
All students were encouraged to try all of the events so they could learn how to perform them. Ribbons for participation, first, second, third, and fourth place were awarded in each event, but a point total was not done as the purpose of the elementary track is to give the students exposure to the events and to have fun.
The track and field day would not have been successful without the Grades 7-12 students who ran the events and all the parent and community volunteers who came to help prepare the track, work in the canteen and run the ribbon booth. Thank you everyone for participating, volunteering, and showing good sportsmanship!
