Big Holes, buckets of booze and belly laughs were the order of the day for the 2nd Annual Big Hole Tournament in Coronach.

17 teams teed off at noon on August 4, 2012 for 13 holes of all-for-fun golf.

Teams were paired up with up to 9 people playing each hole together.

The regular holes were replaced with large holes and there were challenges at each stop.

Each team member took turns performing challenges such as teeing off wearing a welding helmet or standing in a bucket filled with ice; teeing off with a baseball bat, shovel or itty bitty iron.  Andrew Hiltz, local golfer and staff member Michael Hiltz organized the day.  Andrew explained that the original idea was Jason Lesperance and Michael’s.  The ideas have come from the internet and lots of brain storming.

The fun continued on the green where golfers putted out with pool cues, hockey sticks or aiming for long tubes that led to the “big hole”.

As well, a shooter bar and marshmallow longest drive welcomed the golfers on the tee off box for #6.

After a supper of barbequed burger and salads, the time came for the prizes.

In keeping with the “fun” theme, no prizes were awarded for low score.

Names were drawn from the hat for a large collection of items donated by local businesses and purchased from the What Not Shop.

Some of the popular prizes included Aust Store t-shirts and underwear, Richardson back pack, Duran Duran record, Bodyworks VHS and self-help books.

After the prizes were drawn for, a Rock-Paper-Scissors tournament between all of the teams still in attendance determined the tournament’s winning team.

Larissa Major slammed it home, defeating Cole Hicks in a best of seven show down. Major, along with team mates Brandon Mack, Tad Aust and Ty Foley took home the grand prize of a Texas Mickey. Hicks and his team that included brother Jessie, Kyron Manske and Chris Noll won steak dinners at the Coronach Hotel.

This tournament is not for everyone, as the theme of the day certainly was to keep the beer cart girls, shooter girls and clubhouse bartenders busy with hidden silver balls and golden cans being traded in for free drinks and mickeys.

As organizer Andrew Hiltz explained along with the rules of the day. The object of the tournament was to have fun and make lots of money for the golf course. And that’s exactly what happened.

Organizer and staff member, Michael Hiltz reported that $11,752 was taken in at the Big Hole Tournament.  After expenses, the club will see a healthy profit go directly into the operation of the golf club.

Club President, Dennis Hicks talked about the tournament, “This tournament helps out the bottom line for the club in a huge way. Big thank you to all organizers, staff, volunteers and golfers. Lots of fun by all!”

Well if you haven’t had a chance to take in this crazy affair, you will get another chance next year.  Andrew said, “It was a tremendous success once again this year!  As long as people show up, we will keep putting it one year after year!”
